The top position feel vacant with the sudden demise of Bipin Rawat following a helicopter crash on 8 December 2021

Born on 18th May 1961, Lt Gen Anil Chauhan was commissioned into the 11 Gorkha Rifles of the Indian Army in 1981. 

He is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla and Indian Military Academy, Dehradun. 

Lt Gen. Chauhan has authored a book, Aftermath of A Nuclear Attack, which was published in 2010.

, Lt General Anil Chauhan (retired) was awarded the Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Uttam Yudh Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, Sena Medal and Vishisht Seva Medal. 

Lt Gen Anil Chauhan has approximately 40 years of experience and held a number of commands, staff, and instrumental positions

Post retirement, Lt. Gen. Chauhan took over as the Military Advisor in the National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS) from Lt. Gen. Vinod G. Khandare 

Gen. Bipin Rawat who had served as the 27th Army Chief from December 31, 2016 till December 31, 2019, took over as the first CDS on January 1, 2020
